On the outside, Dina Demille is the epitome of normal. She runs a quaint Victorian Bed and Breakfast in a small Texas town, owns a Shih Tzu named Beast, and is a perfect neighbor, whose biggest problem should be what to serve her guests for breakfast. But Dina is...different Her broom is a deadly weapon; her Inn is magic and thinks for itself. Meant to be a lodging for otherworldly visitors, the only permanent guest is a retired Galactic aristocrat who can't leave the grounds because she's responsible for the deaths of millions and someone might shoot her on sight. Under the circumstances, "normal" is a bit of a stretch for Dina.
And now, something with wicked claws and deepwater teeth has begun to hunt at night....Feeling responsible for her neighbors, Dina decides to get involved. Before long, she has to juggle dealing with the annoyingly attractive, ex-military, new neighbor, Sean Evans - an alpha-strain werewolf - and the equally arresting cosmic vampire soldier, Arland, while trying to keep her inn and its guests safe. But the enemy she's facing is unlike anything she's ever encountered before. It's smart, vicious, and lethal, and putting herself between this creature and her neighbors might just cost her everything.
Clean Sweep (Audible Audio Edition) Ilona Andrews Renee Raudman NYLA Books
Clean Sweep was my introduction to the amazing works of Ilona Andrews. Had I never been tempted by this beautiful cover my life would have taken a very different path. I'd probably be dead because my lovely spouse would have sicced her army of murderous crustaceans on me. Joke aside, I really don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for IA's books. They've become a favourite escape strategy in an increasingly difficult for me time. In the last 3 months I've reread 3 out of 5 of their series and planned to leave this for last as it was the very first I read and I wanted it to have symmetry. But then I saw that my fellow addicts are planning to reread it as well so I decided to jump in. After all discussing and speculating about books makes reading so much more fun.Innkeeper is a strange meld of fantasy and sci-fi, one I didn't know I need in my life until I came across this marvelous book. I can't properly express how much I enjoy it and would like for more books to incorporate both worlds. Dina is an unconventional heroine for the UF genre. She doesn't swing around a sword or have flashy magic. Every time I look at her at the cover I feel her projecting serenity. She's a badass but without the usual trappings. And oh boy do I want to be a guest at her inn.
Talking about Gertrude Hunt what I wouldn't give for it to be real! It's amazing and an essential character (if you've read the series you know it's correct to consider it part of the cast) to the story. Years ago I used to think that I'd like to live in Hogwarts but after "staying" a bit at Gertrude Hunt I know that Hogwarts will never do. I want to live in the inn. Though I'll probably have trouble sharing it with Caldenia. Two people who want to poison all their enemies in the same place is just overdoing it.
I usually dislike love triangles but I liked the rivalry between Sean and Arland. Both are interesting and hilarious characters *coughs* urinating on the apple trees and coffee *coughs* and their almost teenage attempts at impressing Dina put a smile on my face. And part of me wishes that I didn't know how it ends so I could enjoy the suspense all over again. Thankfully because it's been almost 4 years since I read it my recollection is fuzzy and it'll be fun to see how much I really remember.

Clean Sweep (Audible Audio Edition) Ilona Andrews Renee Raudman NYLA Books Reviews
3.5 Stars. This book had it’s moments. Don’t let the cover fool you.
I’m just being a brat because I still have to wait a week for Magic Triumphs.
Dina is likable, smart and already a bad ass.
I don’t feel like I saw enough of Sean to really fall in love with him - but I did see I liked.
The end intrigued me, and I’m willing to keep reading.
I really enjoyed this book and the only complaint I had was that it could have been longer. Dina the lead character is facing hard circumstances and deals with them without looking for someone else to provide the solutions. The secondary characters are interesting and not two dimensional. The world that has been created is interesting and leaves lots of scope for the future books (2 of which have already been written with more sure to come). I recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
This is the first book in a new series and it introduces us to a new lead character with a different type of magic than many of the other contemporary fantasy series. I really enjoyed the new type of magic and the heroine of the story is a fascinating character. There are vampires and werewolves in the story, but they fit in nicely with the ongoing story line. There are also portals to other places, which gives lots of opportunities for stories in the future to evolve to. It was fast-paced, and I finished the book much sooner than I had hoped for. I am anxiously awaiting the next book in the series!
First, I am an avid reader and love fantasy novels. I love Ilona Andrews - she's one of my top 5 writers because she's innovative and hilarious with strong female characters.
After finishing her Kate Daniels series (❤), I was looking for something else to read and this popped up as a suggested book. The description said it was a shorter story, so I figured I'd jump in and see what I thought about it.
Amazing!
The characters are very well written, there's a lot of intrigue that lays the background for a much longer series, and it's really funny.
If you're looking for something to read, this is it.
Content warnings? There's a kiss and violence (sorta rogue space assassin on the loose level). Nothing bad, but Andrews books are written for adults not kids. Book 3 has a little more on the romance line.
Okay, no more stalling! Read it!
I’m going to make a bold statement. Ilona Andrews is flat out the best urban fantasy writer(s) out there. The Innkeeper Chronicles are offered as a free serial on their webpage but I prefer to wait and read it once they publish it in book format.
I adore this story. From the characters to the plot, it’s utter perfection. Frankly, the concept of having a sentient house is pretty much a guaranteed winner for me. However, I think it’s also how much I love how they write heroines. They’re intelligent, kick ass, sensitive, and even flawed. It’s hard, I think, to write that well without coming across as “too much.” In many ways, I think they celebrate the fact that to be kick ass as a female does not mean one must lose either their empathy or femininity. It’s delightful and refreshing.
Of course, the side characters are equally perfect. From Gertrude Hunt (the sentient inn and a favorite) to Sean the werewolf to Caladenia the perfectly proper elegant homicidal maniac, they are a rich and well fleshed out cast of characters.
Of note, there is no sex or sexual relations, no cursing that I remember, but a decent amount of violence. This book is an easy five stars and I would give it ten if allowed.
